Former Greek Prime Minister Provided Support to ASALA Armenian Militant Organization

The former Prime Minister of Greece has provided support to the ASALA Armenian militant organization. According to the Milithiri Portal, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States has released a trove of 12 million pages of archival documents pertaining to its activities from 1940 to the 1990s.

The declassified documents notably include reports regarding intelligence operations and political matters. Among these, one report dated July 1, 1987, presented to CIA Director Robert Gates titled 'Counterterrorism, Warnings and Forecasts' mentions that former Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou and his government provided support to the ASALA organization, which had established an office in Athens and was engaged in clandestine activities.

The report also notes that during Papandreou's time, representatives from other Middle Eastern organizations sought asylum in Greece.
