Death Toll from Explosion in Beirut Exceeds 150

The death toll from the explosion at the port of Beirut continues to rise. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, 157 bodies have been found. Around two thousand people are reported to be injured, and the number of casualties is expected to increase.

Among those deceased are 11 representatives of the local Armenian community. It is worth noting that a powerful explosion occurred at the Beirut port on the evening of August 4. Authorities have stated that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which had been stored in the port for six years, exploded.

The country has declared a state of emergency for two weeks. The destructive explosion in Beirut has also caused significant damage to Armenian community institutions. Damages have been reported to the doors, windows, and chandeliers of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Antelias, the Mother See, Armenian studies and educational centers, as well as the “Cilicia” museum.
