New Details: Who Was the Man Who Decapitated His Sister in Yerevan? Chilling Crime Insights
On August 1, 2020, police in the Erebuni district noticed a man crossing the street while carrying a plastic bag with what appeared to be blood-like stains on it. When the officers asked about the stains and what he was carrying, the man responded that it was nothing and that he was going to throw the bag away. Suspecting foul play, the police opened the bag and discovered a female head inside. The man was subsequently taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as Vahram Kavkaz Meljumyan, a 1962-born resident of Berd in the Tavush province. He allegedly decapitated his sister, 1952-born Melanya Meljumyan, with a knife in one of the homes on Nor Arech Street in Yerevan. A criminal case has been initiated under the first part of Article 104 of the RA Criminal Code, and the murder weapon, a knife, has been found. Several expert examinations have been scheduled, including a forensic examination of the body.
According to reports from Berd city, Vahram Meljumyan, who is unmarried, had worked as an autopsy technician in Berd for many years. The Berd Medical Center stated that they only provide space for autopsies, while the forensic medical expert service conducts the actual proceedings. David Harutyunyan was the forensic doctor in the Berd region and was dismissed from that position two years ago. He noted that Vahram Meljumyan did not have a medical education and was registered as a sanitary worker.
Throughout his employment, Vahram Meljumyan had abused alcohol. His sister, Melanya, would periodically take him to Yerevan, where he had temporarily stopped drinking, but upon returning to Berd and encountering individuals who enjoyed alcohol, he resumed drinking with them. David Harutyunyan mentioned that there were reports of Vahram Meljumyan using drugs while in Russia. He stated that four years ago, based on complaints from medical personnel regarding his alcohol use, Vahram Meljumyan was fired and subsequently moved to Yerevan.
Harutyunyan characterized Vahram as having non-aggressive behavior. He stated that there are indications that Vahram Meljumyan is registered as a person with a mental illness; however, he could not confirm this as he had not seen his medical file.
