Déjà Vu? Ahead of the 100th Anniversary of the Treaties of Kars and Moscow, 10 Days Before the Centenary of Sèvres
Arsen Kharatyan, the chief editor of Alik Media, wrote on his Facebook page: "As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Russian-Turkish treaties of Kars and Moscow, which have shaped the political geography of the South Caucasus, ongoing Turkish-Azerbaijani military exercises in Nakhchivan and potential upcoming developments raise several questions.
- Will there be a permanent Turkish military presence in Nakhchivan following this so-called exercise?
- Considering that this area is also near the Iranian border, what is Tehran’s stance on the issue?
- How does the ongoing situation alter the Russian-Turkish agreements concerning Nakhchivan as stipulated in the Moscow and Kars treaties?
- Should we interpret the recent Putin-Erdogan phone conversation to mean that Moscow and Ankara are becoming the problem solvers in the region, just like 100 years ago?
- Is it in Armenia's interests to resolve issues through the Russian-Turkish duo, or should efforts be made to encourage Western involvement as a counterbalance?
These and many similar questions become even more relevant given the rapid pace of events. Therefore, without falling into panic, we must be prepared for all possible developments.
Incidentally, August 10 marks the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Sèvres. This is a good opportunity to remind the countries that signed the treaty of their obligations, thereby involving them in regional processes.
