Armenian Defense Ministry and Armed Forces to Monitor Turkish-Azerbaijani Exercises
From July 29 to August 10, Turkey and Azerbaijan will conduct joint air force exercises in Baku, Nakhchivan, Kurdamir, Ganja, and Yevlakh, with joint ground maneuvers taking place from August 1 to 5 in Nakhchivan and Baku.
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense stated that the exercises will occur at a tactical level. The drills will involve armored vehicles, artillery systems, mortars, combat and transport helicopters, and will also include air defense and missile units from both countries' armed forces.
It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan and Turkey have been conducting joint air force exercises since 2014, with the last one occurring in September 2019 in Azerbaijan. Joint ground exercises between Turkey and Azerbaijan usually take place in the spring at one of the military training grounds in Baku, while summer exercises are typically held separately in Nakhchivan.
According to analyst Hayk Khachikyan from the specialized website 'Razminfo', the upcoming Turkish-Azerbaijani exercises in Nakhchivan are significant due to the recent tensions in Tavush and Turkey's aggressive response to those events. Experts believe that in modern times, the commencement of large-scale military operations cannot be kept secret, and to ensure their unexpectedness, military movements and troop accumulations in certain areas are often conducted under the guise of exercises.
In this context, the spokesperson for the Armenian Defense Ministry, Shushan Stepanyan, emphasized, “The Armenian Defense Ministry and Armed Forces will carefully monitor the course and trends of the Turkish-Azerbaijani exercises.”
