The First Prayer at the Hagia Sophia

The First Prayer at the Hagia Sophia

The historic Byzantine capital, now Turkish Istanbul, sees one of its renowned Christian churches, the Hagia Sophia, transformed into a mosque. For a long time, it served as a museum, but Erdoğan's hands have ultimately reached the Islamization of the cathedral.

Until 1453, it was one of the most significant churches of the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith. However, when Constantinople fell into the hands of the Turks, they converted the cathedral into a mosque. Only in 1931, under the directive of Turkey's secular leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, did the Hagia Sophia become a museum. Now, Erdoğan, leading Turkey towards Islamization, is repeating the history of 1453, despite the reactions from the international community urging that the cathedral be preserved as a museum.
