The Water Crisis in Azerbaijan is Deepening, Says Karen Hovhannisyan
Turkologist and Kurdish studies expert Karen Hovhannisyan noted on his Facebook page that "the water crisis in Azerbaijan is deepening. Initially, irrigation water was a problem, but now drinking water has also become a significant issue. The Kura River has nearly dried up, and the authorities are considering the option of releasing water from the Mingachevir reservoir, while experts warn that this may be even more disastrous. According to specialists, until the reasons for the drying up of the rivers and underground water are identified, it is not advisable to release additional water from Mingachevir.
For the third consecutive day, all wells in the Kura basin have also started to dry up, and large agricultural pumping stations are unable to operate and pump water because the water level does not allow it. Local farmers are using makeshift pumping stations to try to irrigate adjacent lands. Over the past 10 days, the water level of the Kura River has dropped by 1.5 meters."
