Serzh Sargsyan Discusses the Situation in Armenia Due to the Incompetent Governance of Authorities at EPP Videoconference

The third President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, participated this evening in a videoconference conducted from Brussels by the European People’s Party (EPP) on Eastern Partnership leaders, chaired by EPP President Donald Tusk, as reported by the third president's office.

This remote meeting included the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, leaders representing EPP-affiliated parties from Eastern Partnership countries, leaders of opposition parties from EPP member countries, as well as representatives from the EPP leadership, Eastern Partnership nations, Euronest, and the European Parliament.

During the summit, Sargsyan delivered a speech addressing several critical issues concerning Armenia's internal and external policies and security. He spoke about the severely concerning health and socio-economic situation in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the extraordinarily dangerous domestic political situation arising from the incompetent governance of the authorities afflicted by the political virus of populism.

Sargsyan provided a detailed overview of the recent developments in Armenia's internal politics, condemning the statement published yesterday by the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Armenia he leads.

He also addressed the agenda for cooperation between Armenia and the European Union, noting with regret that the efforts of Armenia's new government in this regard, specifically the implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement signed with the EU back in 2017, have not been sufficiently effective.

During the meeting, Sargsyan discussed issues concerning the stability and security of the South Caucasus region and raised his concerns about numerous violations of the ceasefire regime by Azerbaijan during the pandemic. He urged his colleagues to unequivocally support the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the fundamental principles repeatedly announced by the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group.
