Calls for Consolidation Fail: People Want to Be Declared Heroes from Home

The newspaper "Zhoghavorud" writes: "Yesterday in parliament, the deputies voted in favor of the request from the Prosecutor General of Armenia, Arthur Davtyan, which stripped the leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party, Gagik Tsarukyan, of his parliamentary immunity and granted permission for his deprivation of liberty. During both requests, only the deputies from the "My Step" faction and Arman Babajanyan voted in favor, resulting in 87 votes for.

Throughout it all, Tsarukyan was being interrogated at the National Security Service. Following the National Assembly's decision, the extra-parliamentary opposition rushed to issue statements. First, the Republican Party released a statement, followed by a joint statement from the "Homeland," the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, and the "One Armenia" parties, which was more of a call for unity.

"We demand that the current authorities halt the repressive practices deepening the crisis in the country and immediately return the processes to the political plane. We call on our compatriots, as well as political and social forces, to unite around a national-state agenda, to overcome the challenges facing our statehood with nationwide solidarity and potential," the statement read.

Thus, the extra-parliamentary forces make a strong declaration of support for Gagik Tsarukyan; however, in reality, they are content with just issuing statements rather than physically supporting him. It seems that they imagine their fight against the government as merely issuing statements or commenting on social media.

Moreover, it should be noted that the opposition, inspired by the former opposition figure Nikol Pashinyan's victory in 2018, believes that they too can come to power through online struggle, while Pashinyan began to win when he took steps and compelled citizens to act on their own.

What is happening now is that while the National Assembly agrees to deprive Gagik Tsarukyan of his freedom, the opposition is merely "marching" by issuing online statements. It is clear that they have fears, and a cowardly opposition, naturally, cannot succeed. It can already be confidently stated that the consolidation they speak of will not take place. And one more thing: it should be noted that those who wish to have a role in politics must personally face sacrifices and be present in the most challenging areas. If people want to be declared political heroes from their homes, they must understand that they are initially doomed to failure."
More details can be found in today's issue of the newspaper.
