Disproportionately High Number of COVID-19 Deaths Among Ethnic Minorities in the UK
The United Kingdom, which ranks second in the world for COVID-19 fatalities after the United States, is easing quarantine restrictions on one hand while analyzing the data accumulated during the pandemic, leading to some striking conclusions.
According to a study published by Public Health England, the mortality rate from the coronavirus among representatives of ethnic minorities living in the UK’s major cities is significantly higher than that of native Britons, Health Secretary Matt Hancock stated at a press conference in London.
The document indicates that the mortality rate among Bangladeshi immigrants is twice as high as that among native Britons. This figure is also 10-50% higher among Chinese, Pakistani, and Caribbean immigrants residing in the United Kingdom. The Health Secretary did not provide details about the causes of this situation, noting that all factors are still under investigation.
