Urgent: Tense Situation in Kapan as Protest Erupts with Heavy Police Presence
Reports have just emerged that a protest has started in the city of Kapan. It is important to note that on May 24 at 9:40 AM, three residents of Kajaran—Nver Khachatryan, Khore Marzoyan, and Levon Hambardzumyan—were taken into custody by the regional investigative department of Syunik.
A number of citizens gathered in front of the department and police building, demanding the release of the detained individuals. According to family sources, the detainees were subjected to beatings. Meanwhile, the head of the department denied these claims, stating that the arrests were made in accordance with the law. Later, Nver Khachatryan was released.
Relatives are demanding a notification to be sent and are opposed to the detainment without one. The department head stated that the protest is currently in the preliminary investigation phase and that special forces have arrived to take the detainees away. People are preparing to prevent their transfer.
The assembled crowd insists that the detainees not be transferred to the capital, fearing that they will face even harsher treatment there. At this time, the police are attempting to calm the citizens and carry out the transfer.
