Georgia Promises Safe Relaxation for Tourists
Georgia aims to position itself as a safe country in the global tourism market regarding the spread of the virus. This desire was expressed by the country's Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia.
“Georgia could use the crisis resulting from the coronavirus pandemic as an opportunity for economic development,” said Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia during a meeting in Ajara with representatives of the hotel and tourism business. Upcoming government plans for the reopening of tourism were discussed. The authorities have expressed their readiness to support the sector in resuming operations in light of new realities.
After successfully overcoming the coronavirus in Georgia, the government decided to reopen domestic tourism from June 15 and international tourism from July 1. Prime Minister Gakharia promises tourists wishing to visit the country a complete, safe relaxation in what he describes as “small, mobile green zones.” This is being done to protect tourists and locals from infection.
According to his statement, it is necessary to take advantage of the tectonic changes occurring in the structure of transport networks' supply and demand due to the crisis, turning the strongest sides of the economy into competitive advantages: “Now we can transform the strongest sides of our economy into competitive advantages by making progress… Today, Georgia has all the data to use this crisis as an opportunity, especially in the economy… It is clear that it will not be easy, but this is the only opportunity for Georgia to become one of the first countries to start gradually and cautiously opening the tourism sector,” Gakharia stated.
The World Tourism Organization, together with the World Health Organization, will soon present specific rules for opening the tourism sector and traveling.
