Fact: Review of Land Privatization is Coming

Fact: Review of Land Privatization is Coming

The newspaper "Fact" reports that authorities are planning to address the issue of reviewing some agricultural lands that were privatized back in 1991. This initiative arises from the fact that many landowners with several hectares of cultivated land have not resided in Armenia for the last 20-25 years. Additionally, many of them are citizens of other countries, and their lands have largely remained uncultivated, progressively turning into wasteland.

The next and more critical reason is that in almost all communities, former village heads have privatized the best lands of the communities—commonly referred to as reserves—and are using them under the pretense of rental for their own needs. This process was carried out as follows: the lands were cultivated during their management years, but after their term ended, contracts were signed for 30-50 years and are currently being cultivated on that basis.

In this regard, according to our information, instructions have been issued to accurately map and thoroughly study all risk issues, so that a corresponding legislative initiative can be prepared.
