More Than 25,600 New COVID-19 Cases Discovered Worldwide in One Day
As of this morning, a total of 287,546 people worldwide are infected with the COVID-19 virus. A total of 12,748 people have died from the infection, according to the South China Morning Post. In the past day, the number of infected has increased by 25,660, and the death toll has risen by 1,581.
Currently, more than 89,000 people have recovered from the virus. The newspaper maintains an electronic tally of patients, deaths, and recoveries based on official data from respective countries.
Italy leads Europe in both the number of cases and deaths. According to Saturday evening's data, there have been 4,825 deaths recorded in the country, which is an increase of 793 compared to Wednesday’s figures. A total of 53,578 infections have been recorded.
Spain has reported 24,926 cases, with 1,326 deaths. France has 14,459 cases, Germany has 13,957, Switzerland has 6,100, the United Kingdom has 5,018, the Netherlands has 2,994, Austria has 2,388, Belgium has 2,257, Norway has 1,742, Sweden has 1,623, and Denmark has 1,255.
In the United States, as of Friday evening, there are 22,177 reported cases, with 278 fatalities.
In Asia, China continues to hold the top position, where the death toll has reached 3,261 since December, with a total of 81,054 cases of infection. South Korea reported 98 new cases and 2 deaths over the past day, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients to 8,897, with 104 fatalities.
In Iran, the death toll has reached 1,566 among 20,610 infected individuals. Japan has reported 1,767 cases with 53 deaths.
The South China Morning Post reports that nearly 1 billion people around the world are currently in quarantine. In the United States, one-third of the population is under a “stay-at-home” order.
