Georgian Parliament Approves President's Decision to Declare State of Emergency
The Georgian Parliament has approved with a majority of votes the decision of President Salome Zurabishvili to declare a state of emergency across the country due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
“The declaration of a state of emergency is necessary for the government to effectively manage the situation and to have a legal basis for it,” the president stated while presenting the decree to the parliament.
A total of 115 out of 150 legislators voted in favor of the state of emergency, with two voting against. Members of the opposition also supported this decision.
Zurabishvili has announced that the state of emergency will remain in effect until April 21.
