Suspicion That Georgia May Close Lars Due to Coronavirus
The Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia, has announced that authorities are prepared to close borders with any country that poses a threat in terms of coronavirus spread if necessary. He made this statement in response to a question from a Bloomberg journalist regarding whether Georgia would close its borders with Russia, where, according to the journalist, the coronavirus is rampant, although authorities are reportedly hiding this information.
“In this case, we are not only talking about Russia. We are discussing a global problem and a virus that does not recognize borders. The safety of our citizens is our priority. To reduce risks, we will take measures at the border connected to any country,” he stated.
The Upper Lars checkpoint is located at the border between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Georgia, through which cargo transportation between Russia and Armenia also occurs.
