Coronavirus and Climate Conditions: How the Virus Spreads Faster

The new strain of COVID-19 coronavirus is likely to spread more rapidly in relatively cold climatic conditions, specifically at temperatures around 9 degrees Celsius. This conclusion has been drawn by scientists from China’s Shunyi Yatsen University, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

The researchers examined a large number of cases of infection and analyzed how weather and climatic conditions affect the transmission of the virus. The analysis showed that the number of infection cases increased on average in conditions of +8.7 degrees Celsius, and then decreased. The scientists’ report states that the virus is very sensitive to high temperatures, which could hinder its spread in warmer countries. Consequently, the virus will spread faster in colder countries.

The scientists concluded that countries and regions with lower temperatures should take stringent measures to prevent the disease.

It is noted that health organizations expect that COVID-19 will become less contagious with the onset of the warm season, similar to what occurs with colds and influenza.

Meanwhile, a separate study conducted by a group of scientists from Harvard University and epidemiologist Mark Lipsitch showed that the coronavirus can be transmitted quickly across various climatic conditions, from the cold and dry regions of northern China to tropical areas such as Singapore.
