Scientists Report Changes in Coronavirus Symptoms

Scientists in China have discovered changes in the symptoms of patients infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus. This is stated in an analysis published by the Social Science Research Network.

The study was conducted on 89 patients at Wuhan University Hospital. The patients were divided into two groups: the first group consisted of 31 patients who were hospitalized from January 16 to 22, and the second group comprised 58 patients who were hospitalized from January 23 to 29. The second group was primarily composed of women (45 out of 58 or 77.6%), while the first group included 45.2% women.

The first group of patients exhibited a higher prevalence of the following symptoms: fever (67.7%), weakness (41.9%), and muscle pain (22.6%). In the first group, 32.3% of patients showed a weak production of sputum, whereas this symptom was observed in only 6.9% of the second group.

According to the study, other symptoms of the virus, such as cough, nausea, and diarrhea, did not significantly differ between the two patient groups. Furthermore, 54.2% of patients in the first group had a decrease in lymphocyte levels.

Scientists indicate that clinical symptoms may vary at different times due to mutations of the virus. Asymptomatic carriers are also being reported.
