Tourism Sector in Tbilisi on Verge of Bankruptcy Due to Coronavirus
The head of the Georgian Hotels and Restaurants Association, Shalva Alaverdashvili, has stated that the country's tourism sector could be on the brink of bankruptcy due to the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus worldwide.
“We have received the first serious blow, as 80-90 percent of hotel bookings in Tbilisi for March and April have been canceled in the last 5-6 days. This means that the sector is almost on the verge of bankruptcy. I don't know what will happen tomorrow,” Alaverdashvili noted.
According to him, Tbilisi has been the hardest hit because the active tourist season in most regions has not yet begun, which has somewhat eased their situation.
