Omon Will No Longer Secure the Border

Omon Will No Longer Secure the Border

The newspaper "Hraparak" writes: "Months after the revolution, in August 2018, a decision was made, initiated directly by the authorities, particularly by Nikol Pashinyan, to send the internal troops of the police to guard the border. At that time, this decision was accepted with great enthusiasm.

Although according to the law on 'Internal Troops', one of the tasks assigned to them was 'participating in the defense of the Republic of Armenia', the previous authorities had primarily used them to suppress opposition gatherings and to maintain internal trenches. However, it turns out that after the anticipated reforms in the police, there will be a reversal of this practice, and the so-called Omon will no longer guard the border.

Yesterday, this news was also confirmed to us by Armen Khachatryan, one of the authors of the police reform concept and a member of the "My Step" faction.

It should be noted that a strategy has been developed according to which the police will become a Ministry of Internal Affairs. We would also like to emphasize that we regularly receive complaints from the police officers who are sent to the border, stating that they do not receive additional compensation for border protection in a timely manner. In addition, they complain that they did not join the police to guard the border, but with the hope of a promising career,” the newspaper writes.
