Catholicos of All Armenians Sends Letter to President of Syria

On February 14, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, sent a letter to the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Bashar al-Assad, thanking him on behalf of the Armenian people for the unanimous adoption of the resolution recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide by the Syrian People’s Assembly.

“The condemnation of crimes against humanity and the rejection of denialism is a strong guarantee for preventing new genocides and atrocities due to religious and national discrimination and for building a peaceful and harmonious world. The people of Syria today reaffirmed the commitment and determination of their ancestors over 100 years ago, who sheltered the exiled and displaced children of our nation during the tragic years of the Armenian Genocide. The construction of the Church of the Holy Martyrs in the desert of Deir ez-Zor decades ago, during the presidency of your esteemed father, Hafez al-Assad, became another affirmation of the stance taken by the Syrian authorities regarding the Armenian Genocide.

In recent times, we have repeatedly witnessed your and your people's marked goodwill and attention towards our people, which is vividly expressed through the towering Armenian sanctuaries, cultural and educational institutions on Syrian soil, and numerous testimonies of the vibrant life of the Armenian community in Syria,” the letter states.

His Holiness expressed solidarity with the devout people of Syria and wished for the establishment of long-awaited peace and tranquility in the country, as well as for the dreams of the brotherly people overcoming difficulties to become a reality.
