Some Supermarket Chains Sell Sugar Below Cost, Investigation Launched to Understand the Reason

The Competition Protection Commission of Armenia has initiated an investigation into the sugar market. This was stated by Gegham Gevorgyan, the chairman of the Commission, during a conversation with journalists after today's government meeting, responding to remarks that there appears to be a price drop issue in this market.

“We have clear insights in this area. Our studies have shown that sugar is being sold below cost in some supermarket chains. We have launched an investigation to understand the reasons,” Gevorgyan emphasized.

He noted that the investigation has been initiated due to competitive discrepancies or abuse of a dominant position. “We will examine the case, and it will become clear,” he added.

In response to a question about whether there are other risky markets under investigation, the chairman of the Commission stated that investigations have also commenced in the fields of wheat, flour circulation, mining, media advertising, and the egg sector.
