Major Car Accident Occurs in Gegharkunik Province, Mercedes and Opel Collide, 8 Injured
On February 8, a major car accident occurred in Gegharkunik Province. Around 06:50, on the 57 km section of the Sevan-Martuni-Getap highway, in the administrative area of the village of Tsakqar, a Mercedes and an Opel Vectra collided head-on in front of the 'Gohar' wedding hall.
According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, as a result of the accident, 8 people with varying degrees of bodily injuries were transported to the Martuni medical center. Witnesses at the scene reported that one of the causes of the accident was the icy road, as local road officials had taken no measures to treat the road with salt and sand, suggesting that if the road had been adequately maintained, the accident might have been avoided.
Several individuals also mentioned that the drivers and the injured were heading to military oath ceremonies, with the Opel driver's passengers traveling to the Ijevan military unit, while those in the Mercedes were headed to Vardenis.
