World Health Organization to Hold Emergency Meeting on China
The World Health Organization (WHO) will hold an emergency meeting on January 22 regarding the outbreak of a new coronavirus in China. This was announced in a press release from the organization, as reported by RIA Novosti.
“The committee will meet on Wednesday, January 22, in Geneva to determine whether the outbreak poses a public health emergency of international concern,” the statement said.
It should be noted that the number of coronavirus infections continues to increase in China. According to the data released by the State Committee of Hygiene and Health of the People's Republic of China on January 21, the number of infected individuals has reached 291.
Over the past 24 hours, 77 new cases have been reported in the city of Wuhan and the adjacent Hubei province, as well as in Beijing and Shanghai. According to published statistics, the majority of infected individuals (270 people) are located in Wuhan, where the outbreak originated.
Five residents have been hospitalized in the Chinese capital, 14 in the southern province of Guangdong, and two in Shanghai. Additionally, 54 individuals in 14 different regions have been placed under quarantine after showing symptoms similar to pneumonia.
The number of fatalities from the new type of pneumonia in Wuhan has reached 6.
