The Ombudsman Launches an Investigation into Slaughter in Abattoirs
At the instruction of the Human Rights Defender, the staff has examined the protests of veterinarians and meat vendors, including their claims that the Government has not provided the necessary conditions for the proper functioning of abattoirs.
In particular, according to participants in the protests, they are also concerned about the distance of abattoirs from residential areas and the additional financial burden this imposes on them.
The Human Rights Defender has initiated an investigation into the prohibition of slaughtering animals in domestic conditions and permitting it exclusively in abattoirs, as well as concerning citizens' complaints about this issue.
Considering the mentioned complaints, the Human Rights Defender has sent written inquiries to the Government, including to the Food Safety Inspection Authority. Clarifications have also been requested regarding the state policy directions and principles established in this sector.
