20 Aftershocks Recorded in Ashotsk Earthquake Epicenter, Governor Says
Normal energy release is occurring in the earthquake epicenter of Ashotsk. This was reported by Shirak Governor Tigran Petrosyan on his Facebook page, addressing the earthquake registered in Armenia early this morning.
“Since the first tremor, approximately 20 aftershocks have been recorded, the majority of which were very weak (up to 1 magnitude), and just now a slightly stronger tremor of up to 3 magnitude has been observed,” the governor stated.
It is reminded that today, January 18, at 05:28 local time (01:28 GMT), the National Emergency Situations Disaster Risk Reduction Agency’s seismic network registered an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 at a depth of 10 kilometers, located 10 kilometers southeast of the village of Ashotsk at geographical coordinates of 40.950 north latitude and 43.990 east longitude. The intensity of the underground tremor in the epicentral zone was between 4 and 5 on the scale.
The earthquake was felt in the city of Spitak in the Lori province, as well as in the villages of Hartsaghuygh (Khaltakch) and Shirakamut, in the city of Gyumri in Shirak province, and in the villages of Jajur and Ashotsk.
