Protest Action Against the Closure of Yeghvard Maternity Hospital
Today, healthcare workers at the Yeghvard Maternity Hospital are staging a protest against its impending closure. One of the employees mentioned that yesterday the hospital was supposed to receive a birth, but later they learned that the delivery was transferred to Yerevan, although the reason remains unclear.
Another healthcare worker stated that the number of registered births at the facility has increased by 17 over the past year, with the latest figure showing a total of 139 births, and that normal shifts have been maintained.
One protest participant remarked that such decisions by the Ministry of Health are often interpreted as implying that conditions in the provinces are inadequate, yet Yeghvard boasts skilled doctors who deserve respect. “Closing the maternity hospital is wrong; many will be forced to give birth at home. The people want to give birth in their own city. Before making a decision, they should think it through, understand the situation, and not hastily sign any documents. Consider the people's opinion; they only consult us when it matters,” said one of the protesters.
