The European Union is Satisfied with Armenia

On December 16 in Brussels, the 2nd meeting of the EU-Armenia Partnership Committee established under the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement took place, where the implementation of the Agreement was discussed. This information was provided to Armenpress by the EU Delegation to Armenia.

The Agreement plays a crucial role in the ambitious and long-term strategic vision of the Armenian government for the implementation of reforms and the modernization of the country. The European Union has expressed satisfaction with the progress made by Armenia in implementing the reform agenda so far, particularly regarding new judicial and anti-corruption strategies.

At the same time, there is successful cooperation between the EU and Armenia within the framework of the EU-Armenia Justice Dialogue. The EU has emphasized the continuation of the reform path adopted by Armenia, including in terms of ensuring the protection of human rights. The reform must adhere to the fundamental principles of the rule of law and be based on inclusive dialogue and partnership with all stakeholders, including civil society.

As a key partner in Armenia's reforms, the EU is prepared to provide the necessary expert and financial support for strengthening the government's capacities in the development and implementation of reforms and aligning with EU standards.

The Partnership Committee also discussed the progress in implementing the Agreement in the fields of transportation, energy, and environment, directing towards organizing further detailed discussions at the expert level under the EU-Armenia sub-committee on energy, transportation, environment, climate action, and civil protection, which will take place in Yerevan in March 2020.

The dialogue on educational reforms between the EU and Armenia will continue. The parties will pursue collaboration in the field of research under the Horizon 2020 program and will begin consultations on the Horizon Europe program.

Moreover, the EU and Armenia will consider the possibilities for developing a youth strategy and action plan. Issues related to economic development, security, the Eastern Partnership, and regional developments were also discussed during the meeting.

The meeting was co-chaired by Luc Devigne, Deputy Director General for Europe and Central Asia at the European External Action Service, and Avet Adontz, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
