The Police Have Had the Legal Authority to Wiretap Phone Conversations for 12 Years, Says Pashinyan

The adoption of the bill does not mean that anyone can be wiretapped at any time. This was stated by Sipan Pashinyan, a member of the ruling 'My Step' alliance, during the discussion of the bill that grants the Armenian police the opportunity to wiretap citizens' phone conversations on December 12.

According to him, the police have had the authority to wiretap citizens' phone conversations based on court decisions for 12 years. 'Today, it is only about allowing the police to have their own technical means, which will enable them to act more promptly and increase their operational efficiency,' he added.

It is noted that the bill proposes to allow the Armenian police to wiretap citizens' phone conversations independently, particularly those who are considered suspects in various cases.
