Free Cheese Only Exists in a Trap: Sergey Bagratyan on Credit Agreements

“Free cheese only exists in a trap,” stated Sergey Bagratyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia faction, during discussions regarding the signing of credit agreements in the National Assembly.

“Our esteemed Mr. Mirzoyan made the classical statement that, yes, the opposition generally votes against the budget and loans, but at this moment, we want to remind our respected government colleagues that there is something behind this free money; nobody gives away money for nothing. Those objectives will surface one day. We say let’s discuss this today, prepare, and understand what they will demand from us in exchange for that free money. Let's be ready from the outset and know what is coming our way. This is what it’s about. I know that the issue is political, but I say let’s conduct an economic analysis to understand what is going to hit us,” Bagratyan emphasized.

Bagratyan pointed out that he finds the government’s approach unclear because the government knows certain things and doesn’t want to disclose others. “In the past, they didn’t mention anything at all; now they are saying half of it, but we want to understand that half too so that our vote has meaning. Years later, we don’t want to be asked why we voted a certain way, only to respond that we didn’t quite understand, yet we voted in favor,” he stressed.
