Defense Ministry Plans to Restore Military Sports Club

At the National Assembly, Deputy Minister of Defense Gabriyel Balayan presented amendments to the Law of the Republic of Armenia on the Disciplinary Regulations of the Armed Forces and discussed changes to the Law on Military Service and the Status of Servicemen.

The draft legislation includes plans to restore the military sports club. “According to the draft law, it is proposed to include state institutions for organizing military sports or recreation among military establishments, defining the relationships related to their establishment and functioning,” said the deputy minister, adding that if this draft receives approval, it is expected that the military sports club will be restored. Additionally, citizens who have already achieved success in sports will be conscripted into military service, provided they do not fall under the provisions for granting deferments for those who have registered significant achievements.

“This project opens up great opportunities for the promotion and development of sports within the army, creating an opportunity to incorporate this club system into the charter of the respective state institution. In other words, it aims to attempt to reduce budget allocations and realize sports development through private investments. We will primarily focus on Olympic sports,” he stated.

Also presented along with the package, it is proposed to allow servicemen and retired former servicemen to relax for free in interdepartmental vacation facilities. “This will significantly increase the attractiveness of military service. The emphasis will be on the servicemen performing combat duty on the front lines, who will have the opportunity to organize relaxation with their family members in interdepartmental recreation centers,” he noted.
