Armenian Delegation Thwarts Azerbaijani Attempt to Discuss Nuclear Power Plant Closure, Says Abrahamyan

During a session of the Eastern Partnership 'Euronest' parliamentary assembly in Tbilisi, the Armenian delegation thwarted attempts by the Azerbaijani delegation to raise the issue of closing the Armenian nuclear power plant. This was stated by the head of the Armenian delegation, Gayane Abrahamyan, at a press conference.

“It was a struggle, but we managed to halt the Azerbaijani initiative related to the closure of the Metsamor nuclear power plant. The Azerbaijani side directly emphasized that the EU should make every effort to implement the closure of the nuclear power plant in the shortest possible timeframes. Just before the vote, I took the floor in the committee and presented lengthy arguments as to why this proposal is unacceptable. We also presented excerpts from the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) report, which clearly states that the Metsamor nuclear power plant has made significant progress in its safety level over the past 2-3 years,” said Gayane Abrahamyan.

According to the lawmaker, her arguments had an impact on those present, and all members, except for the representative of the Azerbaijani delegation, voted against the proposal for closing the Armenian nuclear power plant.
