Nune Sargsyan Appointed as Human Rights Defender for Children by UNICEF

The First Lady of the Republic of Armenia, Nune Sargsyan, attended a ceremonial event dedicated to the 25th anniversary of UNICEF’s activities in Armenia at the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran).

As reported by the Public Relations Department of the Office of the President of the Republic of Armenia, Tanya Radotchay, UNICEF representative in Armenia, announced that Nune Sargsyan has been appointed as the emergency defender of children's rights. “When I first met Mrs. Sargsyan last year, she immediately offered her support and assistance to the children’s foundation. Then I became acquainted with her activities, learned that she is a children’s writer whose books are very popular and have been translated into various languages, giving children from other cultures the opportunity to read them,” said Tanya Radotchay. “Mrs. Sargsyan is among those who care for children and strives to do everything possible to make children's lives better. It is a great honor for us to offer Mrs. Sargsyan the mission of emergency defender of children's rights, thus uniting our efforts and emphasizing the importance of this work not only in Armenia but also beyond its borders.”

The First Lady, Nune Sargsyan, expressed her gratitude for being honored with such a title. Congratulating UNICEF on its 25th anniversary in Armenia, she emphasized that for 25 years, people have dedicated their work, efforts, and enthusiasm to ensuring a better life for children. “UNICEF is a humanitarian organization that must continue to exist, and that is why we should not leave it alone, both here in Armenia and around the world. We must unite around UNICEF to ensure that children have a happy childhood. Children are our wealth and our greatest value,” said Sargsyan.

She highlighted the need to provide equal opportunities and conditions for children, underscoring that they all have the right to be happy and to have a safe and healthy childhood. Mrs. Sargsyan specifically pointed out the issue of ensuring quality education in remote villages of Armenia. “One of the programs of UNICEF and my own will be dedicated to education and addressing the shortage of teachers in remote villages,” she emphasized. “I will carry out the duties of the emergency defender of children's rights with great honor. The ‘emergency’ for me means children, because every child is extraordinary, a miracle, a universe. Every child has a talent, a gift, and I ask everyone to find that talent, cherish it, and nurture it so that the child can perfect it and use it for our nation, people, and homeland in the future. Our children need us, and we all must try to give them our love, our care, and show them that they are not alone and that they live in a country that can take care of them and secure their future.”

The First Lady of the Republic of Armenia, Nune Sargsyan, assured that she will dedicate her efforts to ensure that children have a healthy, happy, and secure childhood.
