Video: Government Not Opposed to Granting Police Wiretapping Rights, But Against Doing So at This Time

The National Assembly is discussing the issue of granting the police, alongside the National Security Service, the right to wiretap. However, the government is opposed to this at the moment, which has puzzled lawmakers.

On behalf of the government, Deputy Minister of Justice Srbouhi Galoyan explained that in general, the government does not rule out the possibility of granting such authority to the police, but the matter is one of timing.

According to the Deputy Minister, a comprehensive reform strategy for the police sector should be developed first, and only after that can it be determined whether the police need such a tool or not.

Galoyan also reminded that ultimately, the police can wiretap, but this cannot be organized independently; cooperation with the National Security Service will be necessary. She requested that lawmakers vote against the draft today.
