I Thought I Was Very Original Thinking That Women Cannot Remain Indifferent to Conflict Resolution. Hakobyan
When I started the "Women for Peace Campaign," I didn't know that the UN Resolution 1325 existed and I thought I was very original in believing that women cannot remain indifferent to conflict resolution. However, Mrs. Zarouhie Batoyan came and brought the resolution, and it turned out that the world has long recognized that women must be involved in the process of resolving conflicts.
During the international conference titled "The Role of Women in Peacebuilding: Opportunities and Challenges," the wife of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Anna Hakobyan, expressed hope that the departments involved in the resolution would engage in the processes. She noted that the campaign has a history of 1.5 years and is related to the revolution, and during the April war of 2016, as a newspaper editor, she closely followed the horrific news.
"Now, because there is a danger that one side of the conflict could restart the conflict at any time, I decided to take action to prevent it, thus creating a campaign that has a declarative nature. What is the message of the campaign? We urge and demand all sides involved in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict not to resort to military means and to seek solutions around the negotiating table; it is impossible to imagine a clearer and simpler message. I believe that 25 years have passed since 1994, and we have a negotiation process that has gone through various phases, but the cart has not moved from its place. Over the years, we have had a creeping war, and we have had casualties, which have not brought us closer to establishing peace and resolving the issue," she said.
According to Hakobyan, the April war showed that the other side had been preparing and arming itself with the latest weapons for 22 years, and after 22 years of preparation, they attempted to resolve the issue. "They suffered 1,000 casualties, we had 100; this could continue for another 25 or 50 years and be inherited by our generations. The other option is to stop this practice and sit around the negotiating table to resolve this issue; I believe we have all the prerequisites for that. My message aims to prevent every subsequent victim. We present statistics on casualties and forget that we are talking about families, the unfortunate mothers and families of individuals. This is not just statistics; it is human destiny," Hakobyan noted, emphasizing that when there is talk of peace in Armenia, while Azerbaijan shuts its heart and soul to such initiatives, it is pointless to speak of mutual understanding.
