Interrogations Conducted by Police Officers to Be Recorded
The government approved the legislative initiative regarding the draft law on amendments and modifications to the Law on Police of the Republic of Armenia. The purpose of the draft is to establish legal grounds for the installation of audio-visual recording technical means at the entrances and exits of police buildings, as well as in areas designated for interrogations and operational inquiries, in order to prevent or reveal torture.
The planned devices are to be installed in such a way that they can record the time of individuals entering and exiting the administrative buildings of police divisions, as well as to video record the interrogations carried out by police officers in accordance with the rules established by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia, and the non-secret operational inquiries conducted with suspects as per the law on Operational-Intelligence Activities.
The adoption of the draft will serve as an additional guarantee to prevent and reveal possible cases of torture, inhumane, or other ill-treatment.
