How Many of Those Released Under Amnesty Committed New Crimes: Details

As of November 12, 2019, of the 660 convicts released under the amnesty by the Ministry of Justice of Armenia and the 2,833 beneficiaries registered with the probation service, 99 have committed 210 new crimes. This information was provided in response to a query from Armenpress by the public relations department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia.

The Prosecutor General's Office has stated that it has instructed the police to implement enhanced monitoring of those released from further serving their sentence under the amnesty, as well as those whose criminal prosecution has been terminated during the pre-investigation and trial phases, particularly for individuals accused of committing deliberately more dangerous public offenses and who previously exhibited behavior of high criminal risk while in freedom.

“In this direction, a study has been conducted in the Prosecutor General's Office, and based on the results, a list of individuals who have already been released from serving their sentences and possess the aforementioned risks has been compiled and sent to the police. Appropriate measures are being taken to keep these individuals under constant operational surveillance and to minimize their inclination to commit crimes,” said the public relations department of the Prosecutor General's Office.

On November 1, 2018, the National Assembly unanimously approved a draft law on declaring amnesty for criminal cases in connection with the 2800th anniversary of the establishment of Erebuni-Yerevan and the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the First Armenian Republic.
