150 Tons of Potatoes Imported from Pakistan: Agriculture Continues to Decline in Armenia

According to the newspaper “Zhoghovurd”, agriculture continues to decline in our country. Meanwhile, there is an increasing import of large quantities of agricultural products, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and potatoes, primarily from Turkey. The newspaper has learned from the State Revenue Committee of Armenia that in the first half of this year, 3,496 tons of tomatoes have been imported into Armenia, whereas during the same period last year, only 20 tons of tomatoes were imported.

Tomatoes were imported from Iran (693 tons), Georgia (46.1 tons), and the primary quantity, 2,756 tons, was imported from Turkey. According to experts, the processing of tomatoes and potatoes is limited because farmers face marketing challenges. Interestingly, 150 tons of potatoes have even been imported from Pakistan, the only country in the world that does not recognize Armenia as a free and sovereign state.

In the first six months of 2018, Armenia imported 1,941 tons of potatoes, while during the same period this year, 4,041 tons have been imported, including 471 tons from Belarus, 343 tons from Iran, 1,044 tons from the Netherlands, and 1,590 tons from Russia.
