The Call of 'Sasna Tsrer' to the Authorities
In Armenia, the recent history regarding the regulations of the Armenian language should remind the current authorities to be particularly cautious in reviewing the scope and quality of Armenian language instruction. This statement was released by the political party 'Sasna Tsrer'.
The announcement further states: “Especially considering that the current Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport has notably been a leader in the movement against foreign language schools. Unfortunately, the current government has not demonstrated a systematic and strategic approach regarding the teaching of the Armenian language, Armenian literature, and Armenian history in higher education. In particular, this review has not been conditioned on enhancing the quality of teaching these subjects in general education schools.
As a result, such an approach has turned the management of the sector into a process of uncalculated experiments. This perspective has raised legitimate concerns among the public, and the Law of the Republic of Armenia on Language has allowed representatives of the previous treasonous regime, who opened foreign language schools through modifications that harm the Armenian language, to exploit the phenomenon for their reactionary objectives.
Taking the above into account, we urge the current authorities to: 1. Adopt a systematic and strategic approach in this and other matters by involving sufficient professional resources; 2. Refrain from uncalculated experiments and condition the review of teaching the Armenian language and the aforementioned subjects in higher education on ensuring their adequate scope and quality in general education schools; 3. Create modern electronic environments for the teaching of the Armenian language and, broadly, Armenian studies subjects at all levels.”
