Students from Other Universities Join Protest Demanding Minister's Resignation at Yerevan State University
Protests that began days ago outside the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport are continuing. This morning, students from several faculties of Yerevan State University (YSU), particularly from the Faculty of Armenian Philology, launched a demonstration in collaboration with members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Youth Union.
This time, students from the Armenian State University of Economics, Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi, and other universities have joined the initiative. They are marching to different universities, calling on fellow students to join their efforts.
The march will conclude in front of the Ministry of Education, where a sit-in has resumed. Participants are demanding the resignation of Minister Arayik Harutyunyan. As Gevorg Gyulumyan, a student from the Faculty of Armenian Philology, mentioned in an interview with us, there is a class boycott in their faculty today. At this moment, they cannot specify what actions they will take if the minister does not resign; however, he emphasized that class boycotts and protests will continue.
It is worth noting that days ago, students from the Faculty of Armenian Philology announced a class boycott to express their discontent regarding the draft law on “Higher Education and Science.” Specifically, the provision that states that the teaching of subjects such as “Armenian Language,” “Armenian Literature,” and “Armenian History” is not mandatory in universities.
Following their protest, the participants joined the sit-in organized by the ARF Youth Union in front of the Ministry. However, the youth had halted their protests on Saturday and Sunday since Arayik Harutyunyan does not work on weekends.
