Migration Continues: Armenia's Population Officially Decreased by 11,700 in the Past Year
«Ժողովուրդ» newspaper reports that the number of permanent residents in Armenia has officially decreased by 11,700 in the past year. According to the Armenian Statistical Committee, the population on October 1 of this year was 2,957,500, compared to 2,969,200 during the same period last year.
When analyzing the situation by regions, the population of Lori province decreased by 2,300 over the past year alone. It is worth noting that the copper smelting plant in Alaverdi, located in this province, has long been non-operational, leading to 650 citizens becoming unemployed after its closure.
Even worse is the situation in Shirak province, where the population has decreased by 3,300. What actions is the government taking to address the demographic issue? Is there no concern regarding the obvious decline in the population? In response to the newspaper's questions, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's spokesperson, Vladimir Karapetyan, stated, “Please submit a written request, and I will respond regarding what the government is doing to resolve this issue.” The written inquiry from the «Ժողովուրդ» has, of course, already been sent.
Before receiving a response, it is important to recall that just days ago, at the end of October, Prime Minister Pashinyan addressed the issue of a new economic policy aimed at preventing emigration in an interview with the UAE’s Gulf News. He expressed confidence that the policies of his government and the economic revolution will promote immigration. “Our goal is to ensure the necessary conditions for citizens to work and create, and we are determined in this endeavor,” he said.
