Babajanyan Stresses the Importance of Full Disclosure of October 27 Events

Arman Babajanyan, a member of the National Assembly of Armenia, emphasizes the necessity for both the National Assembly and the new government to create the conditions for the investigation of the events of October 27, 1991.

Babajanyan expressed this viewpoint during the parliamentary announcements session. He stated, “The consequences of October 27 have not been overcome to this day, as the crime of that day has left serious influences on both the domestic and foreign political landscape of our state. These issues have not been resolved, primarily because the crime of October 27 has not been sufficiently disclosed.”

He added, “As lawmakers of the new Armenia, we have a political and moral obligation before the memory of the victims of October 27. We must be able to return the trajectory of the country’s development to the point where it was halted by the treacherous shots of October 27. We have a duty and responsibility to ensure the conditions for the real and complete disclosure of the events of October 27.”

Babajanyan also expressed concern that, unfortunately, this issue is not even articulated in the political agenda of Armenia. He believes that the new government of Armenia must demonstrate appropriate political will and commitment to undertake the real and complete investigation of the October 27 events. He noted that only in this way can we begin to think about the development and progress of Armenia.

On October 27, 1999, during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly of Armenia, a terrorist attack claimed the lives of eight state figures, including Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan and National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchyan.
