Details of a Brutal Incident

The newspaper "Joghavourd" reports: "The news of a police officer's murder in the capital shook the entire country yesterday. According to information from the "Joghavourd" newspaper, on the night of October 16, 18-year-old Samvel and 16-year-old Hrach, who are brothers, committed theft from hair salons located near Victory Park and hid the stolen items under a bridge. Officers from the Arabkir division of the police's state protection service noticed their suspicious behavior, but the boys fled. The police pursued them; one of the boys ran in one direction on Freedom Avenue while the other took off in another direction. The police managed to catch the 18-year-old, and when they subdued his resistance, the 16-year-old who had fled in the opposite direction approached police officer Tigran Arakelyan from behind, seized his weapon, and shot Officer Arakelyan in the head with it. Media reports have revealed that the brothers were former orphans. It is worth noting that this incident of killing a police officer performing his duties is not the first in New Armenia. On May 3, 2018, a police officer was killed during a robbery at HSBC bank at the Komitas-Gulbenkian intersection. Senior police sergeant Ara Shaghgulyan, a father of two, was killed by another police officer's bullet. Law enforcement officials determined that the individual carrying out the armed assault on the bank was Colonel Daniel Danielyan, the head of the traffic police’s violation recording center identified through video surveillance. It is perhaps unprecedented, an uncriticized situation, when a weapon is used against an officer who is dutifully serving at that moment, while globally, there is a respected demeanor towards police officers that evokes fear and reverence.
