Armenian Lavash Ranks Second Among the World's 50 Best Breads According to CNN

Armenian lavash has made it to the list of the world's 50 best breads. CNN has published an article featuring the top 50 breads globally, placing Armenian lavash in second position, as reported by armenpress.am.

“What is bread? You likely do not need to think long about this question. When you want to taste a piece of bread, what you envision says a lot about your origins,” the author notes.

The article references a saying from experts stating, “bread is mostly what your culture speaks about.” CNN separately highlights the national breads from various countries including Afghanistan, Brazil, Egypt, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, China, Ethiopia, and Armenia among others.

“In Germany's Westphalia region, bakers create several breads within 24 hours, whereas Armenian lavash, made from wheat flour, takes on a perfect appearance inside the tandoor in just 30 seconds,” the author mentions.

The process of baking lavash is described in detail, emphasizing the need for friends' assistance. “When your Armenian mother-in-law approaches you with bread in hand, do not be surprised. Lavash is given to newlyweds, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. The process of making lavash requires the participation of friends. Women gather to prepare the dough, and the thin, wide rolled dough is firmly attached inside the preheated tandoor with a strong blow,” the article emphasizes, highlighting the level of skill required.

Lavash is a significant component of Armenian culture and has been included in UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
