47-Year-Old Pregnant Woman Dies at ‘Erebuni’ Medical Center

On October 9, a 47-year-old pregnant woman died at the ‘Erebuni’ Medical Center, as reported on the medical facility's Facebook page. The woman, who was pregnant with twins through in vitro fertilization, was diagnosed with mild preeclampsia.

During a cesarean section at 35 weeks of pregnancy, the woman's condition sharply deteriorated at the moment of removal of the second fetus, leading to respiratory arrest and a drop in blood pressure. She was immediately placed on a ventilator, and specialists in various related fields, including resuscitation experts, were called in. All measures for cardiopulmonary resuscitation were performed, and anti-shock medications were administered as well.

After an hour and a half of interventions, the woman was declared biologically dead. The diagnoses included pulmonary embolism, heart-lung failure, and pulmonary-heart insufficiency, along with a 'Nuchal' syndrome, which involved total cyanosis of the neck, head, and upper limbs.

During the cesarean section, twins were delivered—a boy weighing 1,880 grams and measuring 45 cm, and a girl weighing 2,040 grams and also 45 cm in length. At birth, the infants experienced respiratory issues, received appropriate treatment, and their condition is currently evaluated as stable. They are receiving neonatal care in the neonatal intensive therapy department.

Pulmonary embolisms are considered non-preventable causes of maternal mortality worldwide.
