The Situation Requires Immediate Response from the International Community: HAEE
On October 11, the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) issued a statement regarding the Turkish military incursion that began the previous day in northeastern Syria.
The AGBU Central Board and our worldwide members are alarmed by the ongoing developments in Syria, particularly the military incursion by Turkey in the northeastern regions of the country.
Reports from our local organizations and communities indicate a growing humanitarian crisis and new waves of refugees. The situation calls for an immediate response from the international community and humanitarian organizations.
We acknowledge the statements made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, urging the international community to act promptly to restore the disrupted international peace in the region.
As descendants of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by previous Turkish administrations in 1915, we are acutely aware of how many lives such aggression can claim. The AGBU calls on the Turkish authorities to immediately cease their incursion and aggression against the Syrian people, which horrifically resembles actions taken by the Ottoman Empire nearly a century ago.
We urge the international community to hold Turkey accountable for its actions, as we believe that such measures could have significantly altered the course of Armenian history in 1915.
