Let an Encounter Be Held Between Alik Sargsyan and Witnesses Against Him, Alumyansays

The former Chief of Police of Armenia, Alik Sargsyan, who is accused of abusing official powers, committing official forgery, and concealing a serious crime in the case of March 1, has not given testimony following the charges announced by the National Security Service (NSS). This was reported to NEWS.am by Sargsyan's attorney, Hayk Alumyansays.

According to Alumyansays, Sargsyan has refrained from providing a stance until it becomes clear on what grounds he has been charged. He also stated that they would soon petition the investigative body to conduct an encounter between Alik Sargsyan and the individuals who testified against him.

Earlier, the NSS announced that based on the sufficient evidence collected during the investigation of the criminal case regarding the events that took place in Yerevan from March 1 to 2, 2008, Alik Sargsyan was charged under Article 308, Part 2 (Abuse of official powers, which negligently leads to serious consequences), Article 314, Part 1 (Official forgery), and Article 334, Part 1 (Concealing serious or especially serious crimes) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.

According to the charges, Sargsyan created obstacles to uncovering the circumstances of especially serious crimes, including the murder of individuals. Based on the investigation's data, Assistant to the President of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan and the Deputy Chief of Police Gevorg Meheryan, in agreement with other individuals at the instruction of President Robert Kocharian, misused their official powers for group interests by concealing the means and tools for undermining the constitutional order, as well as the traces of crime, while presenting the events in the European Court of Human Rights and other international bodies under a lawful guise.

Through a group of high-ranking officials from the Police of Armenia, including former Chief of Police Alik Sargsyan, they organized the aforementioned especially serious crime, prompting officials to abuse their official powers, carry out official forgeries, and fabricate evidence, based on their instructions and directives.

As a measure of restraint, a signed undertaking not to leave has been chosen for Alik Sargsyan.
