Laboratory confirmed case of measles reported in Armenia

A laboratory confirmed case of measles was reported in Armenia on October 8, 2023. The patient's clinical symptoms appeared on September 27, characterized by fever and general weakness, followed by the onset of a rash on the face on October 3.

The patient was hospitalized on October 7 at the "Norq" Infectious Clinical Hospital, where they were diagnosed with measles. Currently, measures are being implemented to identify the source of the infection and prevent the further spread of the virus.

The patient works in the service sector and had numerous contacts with citizens in the infectious area, predominantly in the Avan and Erebuni administrative districts of Yerevan, who are likely to be infected and contribute to the local spread of the virus and the emergence of new cases.

It should be noted that the situation regarding measles in Armenia is stable; however, five laboratory confirmed imported cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year, three of which are epidemiologically linked to Ukraine and two to Georgia.

Measles is an acute viral disease with very high contagion potential, characterized by pronounced intoxication, catarrhal, and rash phenomena. The infection is transmitted through airborne routes. Vaccinations are emphasized as the safest and most effective public health measures that save millions of lives every year. Individuals who have not received at least two doses of the measles vaccine are urged to contact their local polyclinic for vaccination.
