Heydar Aliyev Supported Tripartite Negotiation Format: Armenian Cause Committee Releases Confidential Document
The Armenian Cause Committee in the United States has published a confidential document from the White House detailing the conversation that took place on August 1, 1997, between former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev in the Oval Office.
According to a post by the Armenian Cause Committee on Twitter, significant details have emerged indicating that Heydar Aliyev was not opposed to involving Artsakh as a negotiating party in the OSCE-sponsored talks regarding the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Aliyev stated, "For direct negotiations, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Nagorno-Karabakh are represented in the Minsk Group process. We will continue this...".
The transcript of the presidents' conversation also reveals how Heydar Aliyev mentioned that Azerbaijan "places the most trust in the United States" and believes that the U.S. can play a crucial role in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
In turn, Bill Clinton noted that the United States takes its co-chairmanship in the OSCE Minsk Group very seriously.
