Calls in the US to Cease Military Aid to Azerbaijan
The Armenian Issues Committee of the U.S. Congress sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper on September 27, as reported by Voice of America.
In the letter, the committee expressed concern over the increasing volume of military aid provided to Azerbaijan and the violation of parity between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The letter was signed by Congress members Frank Pallone, Jackie Speier, and Adam Schiff.
The leaders of the Armenian committee called on the U.S. Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense to consider the fact of Resolution 901, adopted in 1992, which has been rescinded each year since 2002 through a special document by the Secretary of State. The resolution prohibits American direct aid to Azerbaijan until its leadership takes steps to end the blockade against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and ceases aggressive actions against them.
In the letter, the congress members requested an immediate halt to military assistance to Azerbaijan, a reconsideration of the procedure for lifting Resolution 901, and detailed information about the assistance being provided to Azerbaijan.
